Konnichi wa!
The Japanese Film Fest 2002, or Eiga Sai 2002, kicks off this Sept. 4 at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall. This year features romantic comedies and family dramas. A synopsis of each film and the screening schedule can be found below. Hope you can catch some of them. Ja!

OSAKA STORY [OSAKA MONOGATARI]
The 14-year-old Wakana's parents have been working together as a comedy duo [Manzai] for the past 20 years. Her father's constant infidelity finally pushes her mother to divorce him, however, they still continue working together. Faced with the prospect of raising an infant child from his lover, Kosuke [Wakana's father] disappears. Wakana attempts to find him and discovers who her father really is in the course of her search. A beautiful and very funny film; this brief plot doesn't give justice to the greatness of this film.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE SNOWLAND [WATASHI O SKI NI TSURETE ITTE]
The quiet and unassuming Fumio Yano works in a company that promotes a very popular line of ski wear. He meets and falls in love with Yu but finds it hard to express her true feelings for him. In a Valentine's Day ski wear fashion show, Fumio and Yu are entangled in a very funny adventure where they scramble to make it in time for the press. Here, Fumio receives Yu's token of love.

ADRENALINE DRIVE [ADORENARIN DORAIBU]
When a gas leak explodes at a yakuza's headquarters, a shy, timid nurse and a meek rental car clerk gain possession of a briefcase of blood-soaked money. The rest is a wild ride of chase and escape, as the nurse is transformed into a glamorous heroine and outsmarts the gangsters eager to recover the loot. A sly comedy of robbers versus robbers.

NABBIE'S LOVE [NABBIE NO KOI]
Nanako discovers the secret of her grandmother Nabbie's sad and heartrending story of true love that she has kept hidden for 60 years. The film slowly unfolds the secret, which apparently involves everyone in the small town one way or another. The film takes a humorous look at unrequited love.

NODO JIMAN
"Nodo Jiman" is a famous singing contest where only 20 finalists are chosen out of 4,000. This is the story of four people who entered the Nodo Jiman. Singer Reiko Akagi enters the contest despite objections from her manager. Aspiring yakitori shop owner Keisuke finds that his license examination clashes with the preliminary round. Schoolgirl Rika Takahashi is caught between her worried mother and rebellious sister. Grandpa Kotaro joins the contest simply to cheer up his grandson who is about to move to Brazil. Nodo Jiman brings these colorful people together in a funny and heartwarming way.

TOMORROW [ASHITA]
A series of loosely related vignettes of people carrying on with their daily lives in Nagasaki on August 8, 1945 - one day before the atomic bomb was dropped. It shows the Japanese trying to keep on with their lives in the midst of the war.
